As an aside to the above listings, in The Ordnance Survey maps of the 60s and 70s to the east of Enville, where the Harkaway Club staged meetings up to 1923, was always an outline marked ' Racecourse disused'.It may still be on current maps as well.
Was this the Point-to-Point course of that time? Or is there another explanation for the marking? I would be interested to know if any body can shed more light on this matter.
The Wikipedia entry for Enville says Enville Hall "once boasted a private racecourse, now a mere forestry track".
This is clearly visible on Google Earth, about 3/4 mile east of Enville village. It is a whopping great, very approximately circular course, just under 2 miles round - fairly typical of early to mid 19th century flat courses (cf. Croxton Park, Morpeth, Kington).
Thanks for the extra information on Enville, John.
It does raise the questions though of who raced there- was it the Earl of Stamford and family- and when? The only record I know of racing at Enville was in January 1849 and one wouldn't need a specially made private racecourse for that, surely.
So, I still wonder if the points were held on this racecourse, or part of it.

Having now completed the inter-war period I will take a small break from the research, for a week or so. I am contemplating how much further back to go.
I intend to give information about 1914, the last season before the Great War, but unsure how many years before then. I have details back to 1905, but they are more sketchy and I suspect not complete. Also, I will be going into years of the 100 Years Ago postings, and Mr. Peter Stevens has more detailed information about Pointing in that period than me.
Giving 1914 will give a taster of the races- mostly now real cross country events, which would have varied year by year even when held in the same location. There were about 80 places that had races for the last time in that year and some long forgotten Hunts organising them, which probably stopped hunting for the War and never re-started.
I shall take time to think about what to do.
I do hope this lists have been of interest. Although there are not many comments I do not presume I have got every detail correct. Therefore my usual plea, if you do know of any mistakes please contact me so I can change the information. These 1920 and 30 courses are sometimes difficult to definitely pin down due to lack of corroborative details. I have done what I feel is best and what seems logical in a few instances.
Anyway, I shall be back soon.
I am not completely sure I have separated the Arborfield courses correctly. There were The Remount Depot, Arborfield Cross, Arborfield- Newlands and also Barkham. I will go over my details again to try to improve the listings. And if I concentrate on these courses for now I might have a better chance of getting them right.
Also, the Lanarkshire and Renfrew courses generally described as 'Houston', I know of Wellees, Barochan and Haddockston and sometimes it is a puzzle in which year one finished and another started.
These are just two of the head-scratching problems encountered by any researcher in this field.
I have updated the entries for the courses at Arborfield, Arborfield ( Newlands ) and Barkham, changing a few details and adding some new information.
I shall now start to research the courses for 1914. So will be adding those details soon.
I will start listing the 1914 closures either today or tomorrow, in small batches. One thing which will be slightly speculative is the year individual courses first opened. This is because the information I have to hand only goes back to 1905. As can be noted from the existing lists. More research, when I find the time to do it, is needed for earlier years.
I do hope this is still of interest to you.

As a small aside to the above entries, The Lady Gifford's Harriers meetings held at The Broyle. This is just to the North West of Chichester. In that area, somewhere approximately where the races would have been held, is a location known as Huntersrace Farm. Now this has probably nothing to do with the Points meeting but the name has always intrigued me and I think it is very co-incidental.
Perhaps someone knows the real derivation of the name.
On further research to the above post about Huntersrace Farm. The road that runs by the farm is called Hunters Race and the name appears on maps before the Point-to-Point meetings were held in the area. So, as was presumed, has no connection with the races.
I am not sure if the farm or road came first, probably the latter, but it always interested me- if no one else. Next I will need to find out who or what Hunter was, and the exact definition of Race in this respect.

In the above posting for 1914, I include the Bath and County Harriers at Hinton. I am not completely sure if this is a different course from the one used by the Duke of Beaufort's Hunt in 1920 and 1921. But include it as a separate venue until further information arises to prove otherwise, particularly as it involves a different organising Hunt who had stopped by the time Point-to-Point racing returned after the First World War.
Probably the same course, I reckon. It is described in Steeplechases Past 1906 as "Hinton (Glos)". There are 2 Hintons in Glos, one of which is near Dyrham Park, not far north of Bath, and I think it is in Beaufort country: presumably the Bath & County Harriers hunted round there with permission of the Beaufort. Perhaps the latter found their pre WW1 course was no longer available and used Hinton as a short-term expedient for 1920/1.

I have made an amendment to the 1914 entries above by including the Essex Draghounds at Gardners. I hade listed it elsewhere under North Weald by mistake, so would have come up in the next posting. The courses around Epping are another cause of possible confusion, sometimes different places are simply described as 'Epping'.
Therefore, when one is doing research of this type, it is often beneficial to refer to maps of the relevant period. Although many of the locations can be found on modern maps, the earlier versions give a better idea of the lay of the land at the time. By not having later details which were not there at the time, you can have a fuller understanding of where a. course might have been. For example, North Weald Gullett has disappeared from most recent maps, but can be found in the older ones, before the area was built on. The Essex Hunt raced there in 1909.
